SAE International is pleased to provide financial assistance, in the form of scholarships, to undergraduate and graduate engineering students.

This assistance is made possible by the generous donations of a number of private individuals, businesses, and educational institutions. These scholarships, which are made possible by the SAE Foundation, recognize academic achievement and provide financial assistance to students so that they can pursue their interest in engineering.

Eligibility Requirements for the BMW/SAE Engineering Scholarship Application 2023-2024

  3. A CGPA of 3.75, unweighted, is required of every candidate to qualify
  4. Pursue a degree in engineering or a related science through a program that has been accredited by ABET if you have an interest in mobility and advanced or emerging technologies such as (but not limited to) automated and unmanned, connectivity, cybersecurity, shared or micro-mobility and/or electrification, quantum computing, or blockchain.
  5. You are required to provide two (2) letters of recommendation, one (1) of which should focus on your academic performance, and the other (1) should speak to your involvement in extra-curricular activities or work.
  6. Participation in a science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM)-related extracurricular activity or organization, or job or shadowing that is relevant to your desired major in engineering

Each year, one scholarship in the amount of $1,500 will be awarded.

Selection and Payment for BMW/SAE Engineering Scholarship

  1. The SAE Scholarship Committee will conduct the selection process, and the winner will be notified by the month’s end.
  2. This scholarship will be deposited into your account at the university that you have chosen sometime between July and August.
  3. It can be put toward the cost of tuition or any other miscellaneous educational costs.

Education is the cornerstone of a prosperous and fulfilling professional life. In its capacity as the preeminent professional association for mobility engineering, SAE has played a significant and sustained influence in the development of educational opportunities.

A scholarship program has been established by the staff of SAE, PRI, ITC, and SAE Media Group in the same vein. The goal of the initiative is to encourage and support the continued education of children who are financially reliant on staff members.

The beneficiaries will be chosen based on the applicant’s total grade point average, the ideas presented in the essay, the leadership activities and honours that were listed, written references, and job records. Donations made by SAE staff members to the SAE Foundation, as well as income from a variety of other Foundation activities, go toward funding the scholarship program.

History of BMW/SAE Engineering Scholarship

During the early 1900s, a considerable number of automotive manufacturers emerged in the United States, among numerous others across the globe.

Numerous manufacturers and automotive component firms opted to align themselves with trade associations that catered to their requirements in terms of business promotion and enhancing public recognition of this emerging mode of transportation.

The emergence of patent protection, prevalent technical design challenges, and the establishment of engineering standards were rapidly becoming apparent. Consequently, numerous engineers within the automotive industry indicated a keen interest in fostering an unrestricted exchange of ideas to enhance their personal repertoire of technical knowledge.

History of BMW and SAE Engineering Scholarship Board

During that time period, two notable individuals from the magazine industry, namely Peter Heldt from The Horseless Age and Horace Swetland from The Automobile, played a significant role in promoting and championing the ideas that ultimately led to the establishment of the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE).

In June 1902, Heldt authored an editorial wherein he observed a discernible inclination among automobile manufacturers to adhere to established principles of construction.

Consequently, various technical issues continually emerge, necessitating the collaborative efforts of industry professionals to find resolutions. The most appropriate entity to address these inquiries would be a technical society. The primary focus of this club would pertain to the technological aspects of autos.

Similarly, Horace Swetland employed his editing skills to establish himself as the authoritative spokesperson for automobile engineers during that era, ultimately assuming a prominent role as one of the founding officers of the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE).

Swetland was an individual who significantly influenced the trajectory of SAE history. The Society of Automobile Engineers was established a short 27 months subsequent to the publication of Heldt’s editorial.

The cause was supported by a group of nine individuals, consisting of four officers and five managing officers, who generously dedicated their time and efforts to the cause from their office located in New York City.

During the first year of 1905, Andrew Riker assumed the role of president, while Henry Ford, a promising technical talent, served as the society’s inaugural vice president. The first membership count amounted to 30 engineers.

The annual membership fees were established at a rate of US$10. During the initial decade, the membership of the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) experienced consistent growth. Concurrently, the organization expanded its workforce by hiring full-time staff members.

Additionally, SAE commenced the publication of a technical journal and a complete collection of technical papers, formerly known as SAE Transactions. These publications, now known as SAE International’s Journals, continue to be in existence today.

In 1911, Charles Kettering, a renowned automotive engineer, obtained a patent for the invention of the vehicle self-starter, solidifying his position as one of the most prominent figures in the field. During World War I, Kettering became the leader of the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE).

Through his efforts and those of his successor, Charles Manly, SAE membership experienced significant growth, surpassing 5,000 members by the year 1920. In 1947, the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) appointed C. Erwin Frudden as its president, marking the first instance of a tractor engineer assuming this leadership role. During the period following the war, the SAE Annual Meeting underwent a transformation, becoming a significant showcase and instructional gathering recognized today as the SAE World Congress.

During the 1950s, the membership of the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) had a remarkable and rapid expansion, surpassing the significant milestone of 18,000 members. By the year 1980, the number of members had experienced a significant increase, surpassing a total of 35,000 individuals. The commemoration of the 75th anniversary of the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) garnered acknowledgement from prominent government figures and industry executives on a global scale.
